Māori people settled the city in 1350 and it was given the name Tāmaki Maku Rau, (meaning isthmus of one thousand lovers). The main tribes in the city were the Ngāti Whātua and the Tainui, however following the arrival of Europeans, the Māori population declined dramatically. Following the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, Auckland was officially colonised by Britain and the city began to grow rapidly.Auckland spans the volcanoes of the Auckland Volcanic Field and as a result it boasts some of the worlds most beautiful and unusual scenery.
